Holding onto Summer: mixed-media flower drawings
Over the cold winter months, I’ve been exploring mixed media botanical drawing as a way to capture the vibrant forms of garden flowers. Using a combination of charcoal, coloured pastels, ink washes, and collage, I’ve been able to carve out delicate flower shapes while keeping a sense of depth and context in the background. This approach allows me to study each bloom closely and experiment with colour, light, and texture in ways that traditional methods sometimes can’t.

In Full Bloom: Garden Painting Techniques

Her expressive approach to florals—layering watercolour, gouache, and oil pastels—inspired me to loosen up and see gardens in a new light. In this blog post, I share my experience, studies, and creative insights from three joyful days of painting and learning.

There’s a spark in the studio again, and it’s all thanks to flowers, stencils, and a bit of fearless experimenting. Golden hour meets garden magic! In this new series, I’ve taken a big leap with light, colour and layered textures — all without a brush in sight. Inspired by seedheads, stencils, and summer evenings, these paintings feel like a real turning point.
