A New Dawn (Lindisfarne) is an original seascape monotype inspired by the beauty of the Northumberland coast and the unique atmosphere of Holy Island, Northumberland. I wanted to capture the early morning, when sunlight seems to shimmer on the surface of the sea and everything feels calm, open and full of possibility. The silhouettes of seedheads and grasses are touched by the light, giving warmth and detail to the foreground. I’ve approached this piece in a contemporary and atmospheric way, focusing more on light, mood, and shape rather than realism.
A monotype is a one-off hand-made print, just as unique as a painting. I used rollers and dabbers to spread out ink on a smooth plastic board then made marks with a cloth and other tools. The ink was transferred to the paper using a hand-operated printing press. I built up layers of over-lapping colous by printing several times. I also used paper stencils to make the crisp edges.
