Time and Again is an imaginative interpretation of one of the North East coast’s most iconic views. This original monotype is inspired by Northumberland’s Bamburgh Castle, standing quietly against the vast sweep of sky and wide golden sands below. I hope it expresses the feeling of being there in summer, when the dunes are alive with grasses and scattered wildflowers, softening the edges between land and sea. It's a romantic scene, but I’ve tried to keep it contemporary in spirit, focusing on atmosphere, space, and shifting light rather than detail.
A monotype is a one-off hand-made print, just as unique as a painting. I used rollers and dabbers to spread out ink on a smooth plastic board then made marks with a cloth and other tools. The ink was transferred to the paper using a hand-operated printing press. I built up layers of over-lapping colous by printing several times. I also used paper stencils to make the crisp edges.
