Inspired by the Outer Hebrides, this is an idealised composition rather than a particular view. I aimed to create a balanced rhythm of intersecting shapes that lead the eye towards the horizon. I deliberately kept my colour palette very limited so that they would be more unified and have a moody, atmospheric look. I really enjoyed how the solid greys contrasted with the more lively mark-making of the sky and sea.
The original for this is a monotype, a unique printed painting. I use rollers and dabbers to spread out the ink then make marks with a cloth and other tools. The four headlands were created using torn paper stencils.
