On the Moors
Moorland, Dawn Light (now sold) Inspired by the view from the Cleveland Way near Faceby.
This new series of original monotype paintings was made in response to an invitation to take part in the "Dark Skies" exhibition in Yorkshire this February. The exhibition will be held at the "Inspired By Gallery" at the The Moors National Park Centre in Danby, North Yorkshire. The exhibition opens on 10th February and continues until 16th April.
I loved this theme and found it very difficult to limit the number of monotypes I made as I had so many ideas. The exhibition only requires 4 from each participating artist but I made 8 and will select from these - all shown here.
Dark skies can mean so many things and they're all right up my street (or should that be country path?) Stormy skies come to mind. Also starry night skies. Then there's sunrise and sunset when there's masses of scope for colour. After researching this landscape, I had a strong feeling that heather moorland should also feature in the work I produced. I love that whole craggy, bleak, windswept moorland thing! (Too much Bronte reading!)
Veil of Sunrise
So I tried a number of approaches: two starry night images which are simple in their concept but a new venture for me; two sunsets, a coastal sunrise, and three heather moorland images with rocky outcrops.
This unusual rock formation whilst looking rather like Brimham Rocks is actually Bridestone Rocks within the Moors National Park not far from Danby.

Moorland, Lone Tree (now sold): The lone tree below is a well known icon on Egton High Moor.
For the heather ones, I had to create a new colour palette for the textured foreground area. This time I didn't want to use my usual golds and oranges as the base colour but changed to blues and greens that would be a cooler foil to the mauves and pinks of the final layer. I used a dabber to apply the ink on both layers so the colours would be really varied.
These two night skies monotypes were a new venture for me but I'm pleased with their crisp simplicity and random star effect.

Finally a coastal one loosely based on Sandsend. As it's on the East coast this would be a sunrise rather than a sunset!
