On tranquil seas
These new new seascape originals with sunset colours are a development of the seascapes with headlands I was working on last year. My aim has been to refine the colours of my sunset and sunrise skies to give more atmosphere and a sense of glowing light. The colours are reflected in the sparkling water of the sea.
On the two above, I used gentle colour gradients in the headlands so that they appear to respond to the light and absorb the colours of the sky. I'm fascinated by how back-lighting can give the most riveting optical colours, an effect that good photographers sometimes capture.
This video shows the making of "Tranquility". It begins with two layers of ink already on the paper as I prepare the printing plate for a third, dramatic layer of colour on the sky. The headlands are printed in four steps, getting gradually darker. Read more about monotypes.
I'm so pleased with "Serenity" as I had a clear idea in my head of the soft colours, the japanese influenced design and the feeling of meditative calm. I hope you think I achieved that... Below is a video of me printing the final stencil for this original monotype.
